The Technology Behind EPIPROTECT

What is eiratex?

The material that forms EPIPROTECT is called eiratex, a biosynthetic material engineered to replicate the intricate nanostructure of collagen fibers found in human skin. In other words, eiratex is an engineered material that mimics the structure and function of human skin without relying on animal or human tissue, providing a protective, cell-free, temporary skin layer for burns and similar wounds.

Unique features

The eiratex material is engineered, meaning we can control its production and incorporate unique features that can make wound healing easier for patients and healthcare professionals

Experience features like:

  • Transparency for easy monitoring
  • Optimized moisture and gas levels for faster recovery
  • Anti-microbial barrier for reduced infection risks
  • Single-use design for fewer dressing changes

How EPIPROTECT works

A protective barrier

The billions of fibers within the eiratex network form a protective barrier that prevents bacteria from penetrating the wound, ensuring a clean and safe healing environment. Due to its expansive surface area and precisely sized fibers, eiratex also binds small molecules that can interfere with the healing process, including:

  • Endotoxins
  • Matrix Metalloproteinases (MMPS)
  • Pro-Inflammatory Mediators

Optimal fluid and gas levels

While keeping bacteria out, EPIPROTECT helps maintain optimal healing conditions by balancing fluid and gas levels. The membrane is gas-permeable and buffers moisture, ensuring ideal conditions for moist wound healing while promoting the smooth development of new skin.

In short, EPIPROTECT acts as a temporary skin layer, supporting the natural healing process by promoting scab formation.

Did you know?

Eiratex was originally developed as part of a research project at Linköping University in Sweden. This groundbreaking innovation led to the creation of the spin-off company S2Medical, founded by the eiratex inventors Mårten Skog and Petter Sivlér.

Today, the technology is fully owned by Epiprotect AB, which is part of ABENA — a global leader in healthcare and industrial solutions since 1953.
